Visual inspection is a common practice in manufacturing, typically used to weed out non-conforming parts. In many situations in Indian industry, this visual inspection is performed manually. When human beings are involved, failure to detect a non-conforming part can be high due to distraction, illness, poor lighting and other circumstances. Manual inspection is thus inherently suitable only for low-throughput and specialized inspection needs.

In situations where high throughputs, long periods of operation and the inherent repeatability of measurements are essential, automating the visual inspection process provides many advantages.
