Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) refers to methods used to assist a person with difficulty in oral communication. A variety of methods are used across the world - however, the adoption of technology for AAC is limited in India - largely due to prohibitive costs of such a device.

Voice Output Communication Aids (VOCA) is a sub-class of AAC that uses technology extensively to aid communication. These systems use an electronic interface controllable with people with poor motor control skills to output speech.

Invention Labs has built a portable device (AVAZ) for use by children afflicted with cerebral palsy to augment their communication abilities. The device features a rich graphical interface, a processor capable of running Linux operating system, a purpose-built software and a USB-based non-contact switch that can be easily controlled by children with poor motor skills.
